A Cheap Way to Deep Clean your Make-up Brushes

I've tried many make-up brush cleaners and they all seem to leave my brushes feeling and looking the same. If the products aren't getting all of the make-up out, then I know bacteria is still harboring in the bristles. I got tired of buying the cleaner when it wasn't working, so I started using baby shampoo. Baby Shampoo is mild and it leaves your brushes smelling so fresh. I've been doing this method for over a year and so far none of my brushes have fallen apart. Here are the simple steps:

-Squeeze a dime-sized amount of shampoo into the palm of your hand.
-Swirl your brush in the shampoo and watch the makeup wash out instantly.

-Rinse the brush in your hand by swirling it underneath a small stream of water.
-Be sure to keep the brush upside down to prevent water from getting trapped inside.

-Tap or squeeze out water with a towel or paper towel and then lay flat.
I usually let the brushes dry overnight, although the drying time is about a hour.

And Wallah!

The Benefits of Massaging Your Face

You do not have to spend hundreds of dollars to reap beauty benefits. Although it is nice to be pampered every now and then, some methods can be done in the comfort of your own home. Ever since I was a teenager I've always been very personable with my face. I'd melt down soaps in my old Easy Bake Oven, get a face brush and give myself facials. As an adult, this is still a daily ritual. Aside from cleaning, massaging is also a great way to show yourself some TLC. Here are a few benefits to facial massages:

1. GLOW: We focus so much on having pimple-free skin that we forget some of the other assets needed to have healthy skin. Glowing skin = healthy looking skin. Your skin can be pimple-free but it may lack that glow that defines your features.

2. PUFFINESS: Sometimes our muscles, tissue, and blood settle underneath the skin in one spot causing puffiness. Massaging your face smooths and moves things around for an even surface.

3. WRINKLES: Wrinkles are formed when the muscles are constantly tightened. Massaging relaxes the muscles. Focus a great deal on your forehead and mouth area because they are the most used areas with expressions.

4. CONFIDENCE: During the time that I massage my face, I release any current tension and unnecessary thoughts to focus on ME. That is my ultimate ME time. Anything personable is a great confidence boost.

TIPS:
-Some spas or salons massage your  face with oils, which may not be a great idea for those with oily skin. My skin is both oily and dry, so I skip the oils. Instead, I massage when apply my facial wash and moisturizer. I do not recommend massaging a dry face. You are applying uneven pressure, which would cause red areas or possibly swelling.

-Only massage with your fingertips and heavy pressure isn't necessary.

Kelly Rowland's Hot Purple Lip

I am really loving Kelly Rowland's purple lip that she's been wearing lately.

I didn't have a purple lip color, so I made one :-) I mixed

-MAC Girl About Town lipstick
-Coastal Scents Pigment in Blackstar Blue Mica
-MAC Dazzleglass Funtabulous
-MAC Lipglass

I recommend using MAC Lip Liner in Grape with this color. For a satin look, skip the dazzleglass and blot in between applications.

Here are a few lipsticks that are close to Kelly Rowland's look:

Dear Diary, I Don't Get Along with Other Women

The most popular statement that I hear from other women is "I don't get along with other females. They're too this and they're too that." Well I'm here to tell you how to change that mentality if you ever plan to evolve into a successful person.

1. Don't meet a person before meeting the person. If you've got it in your head that every female that you meet is going to be catty, back-stabbing and jealous then you're automatically setting up your own negative attitude. How do you know what she's going to say or do? And why is she guaranteed to be or do anything negative? Because you are being the negative one in reality. No matter how many times your previous friends have stabbed you in the back, you should allow new people to show who they are before you assume anything. Have you ever met someone and you were really shocked at how nice or cool they were? That is because you went into the situation with negative thoughts. Please don't ever say out loud that you don't get along with women. That is a major RED flag and you're basically describing yourself. Focus on your own personality so that you aren't categorized negatively.

2. Respect Differences. If women were as black and white as men then we would ALL GET ALONG. But that's the beauty of us - we are so much more interesting. We don't just see purple, we see magenta, fuchsia, and grape. If we met and only interacted with people just like ourselves than how will we evolve? How can we become better people if everyone is supposed to say, think, and do everything the same way? Sure, it's great dealing with people that have the same interest as you, but also be open to someone who does things a little differently to broaden your versatility.

3. It's OK to give a compliment You're not a lesbian if you give another woman a compliment. Leave out "No Homo" when saying something nice. When did being complimentary become a homosexual thing anyway? If you see that another woman is wearing something nice or looks great, it's okay to acknowledge greatness instead of looking for a flaw to point out.

4. Everyone is not jealous of you. I will be so glad when the word "hater" is retired, dead, and buried. Everyone does not want what you have. And everyone does not "hate you because you're beautiful". What you ARE is far more important than what you HAVE.

5. She's not the Problem, It's YOU. You don't have more male friends because you don't get along with women. You have more male friends because you are intimidated by any possible challenges with women. And I don't mean challenges as in disagreements or attitudes. I mean being challenged to look within yourself or compare your life to someone else's. When meeting someone that appears to be at the top of the ladder always know that they started at the bottom at some point. When you see someone who "thinks they're all of that," allow them to have their moment, because you don't know what they had to go through to get to where they are now. When those jealous feelings come about, know that your time to shine can be closer to reality if you focused more of the steps to get you there.

6. And lastly, just put the cat claws away. You could learn so much about life, people, business, etc if you dismiss the preconceived notions. The same girl that you think will potentially stab you in the back could be that one person to help you jump start your business. Don't ruin the chances of having clientele, resources, or even a lifetime friend with the silly and negative thinking. We are always preaching about how men mistreat us, well our behavior towards one another is no different.

Thank you for reading and I would love to hear your thoughts.

"What I'm Loving" Friday

1. MAC's Fix Plus Spray: This skin refresher and finishing mist is like Heaven in a bottle. This is great for those that finish their face with powder. A couple of sprays takes away the powdery look, giving off a beautiful dewy finish. And I love the refreshing smell.

2. Philosophy HOPE in a Jar: Facial Moisturizer. I have been using this moisturizer for 4 years now and it has been great. It leaves my skin feeling so soft and moisturized without looking greasy. The smell isn't the best, but I'm a little reluctant when putting anything with a perfume scent on my face anyways.

3. MAC Blush in Springsheen: The name and color is very appropriate for this time of year. The color is a peachy-bronze shimmer. I love this on top of MAC Blush in Peaches.

4. Philosophy Perfume by Philosophy: I love to wear this perfume on days when I don't want to wear perfume per se. It has a shower fresh clean scent that goes well when I'm dressed down.

5. L'OREAL Colour Riche in Sea Fleur: This color is a very pretty sheer iridescent purple-fuchsia.

6. MAC Dazzleglass in Funtabulous: I absolutely love this gloss over any of my purple/fuchsia lipsticks to give a 3D effect.

7.Sugar Baby Bronze Ambition Shimmer Beads: These little pearls of shimmer give the perfect sun kissed and golden finish.

8. MAC Face & Body Foundation: I love that it's water based, which is great for the skin. The coverage is light, but buildable. And for an even lighter coverage, mix in a little moisturizer. You also get a lot of product for the price, 4 FL. OZ. This with MAC Careblend powder gives me flawless skin.

9. Smashbox PhotoFinish Primer: This is one of my favorite primers. I like that it controls the oil and fills in large pores. For a perfect foundation application, this is a MUST-HAVE!

10. Viktor&Rolf FlowerBomb Perfume: This has become my GO-TO perfume for my nights out.

How to Achieve Half Moon Manicures @ Home

With Avery Reinforcement Labels and 2 contrasting nail polish colors, you can easily achieve the trendy half-moon manicure right at home. This look has made it comeback in some of the latest runway shows.

Follow these easy steps to achieve this look:
(I took the labels off a little too soon, so my manicure isn't as precise as it normally is)

1. Start with a clear base, and then a skin-toned color base, allow nails to dry for 20 minutes.
2. Place the labels at the bottom of the nail.
3. Paint over the nail and label with the contrasting color, allow time to dry.
4. Remove labels and then coat with a clear polish.

This look can be achieved with any 2 colors of your choice.
Please send pictures (davida@oddballdsgn.com) for me to share once you have tried this at home.

Fabulosity: What It Is & How to Get It
Fabulosity: What It Is & How to Get It
A lifestyle guide from one of pop culture's most inspirational, stylish, and refreshingly unconventional female power players. At thirty, beauty icon Kimora Lee Simmons is the mistress of her own empire of lifestyle brands, half of one of America's wealthiest couples, mother to two young daughters, and a glamorous staple of the social circuit. Now, in this uplifting and inspiring book, Simmons spills her secrets of how women can use their smarts to build a rich and satisfying life full of success, fun, and, yes, a bit of blinding bling, the "Fabulosity" that every woman deserves. Simmons explains how to balance feminine, stop-them-in-their-tracks glamour with sign-on-the-dotted-line business power; how to get past barriers that exist because of gender, race, or age; how to find a marriageable man who'll support your biggest dreams (while keeping other women at bay); and how to have the most fun of your life while doing it! She gives hundreds of insider tips on fashion, beauty, home decorating, and socializing and explains how she succeeded in business with little formal experience, building a $70 million business out of a T-shirt. Packed with anecdotes and first-person experiences from the catwalks of Paris to P. Diddy's parties, "Fabulosity" takes readers behind the scenes of this diva's diverse, action-packed life and offers insights on how any woman can channel her own "high-profile personality" and creative power, no matter what her own goals may be.  (For more information)

Success Never Smelled So Sweet: How I Followed My Nose and Found My Passion
The creator of Carol’s Daughter, a bath-and-beauty-products company, presents her life story, along with aromatherapy recipes, in this lightly enjoyable read. Price grew up in a loving, strict African-American family in Brooklyn and later pursued careers in singing and television. She also ran up huge credit card debt, and wound up owing the IRS tens of thousands of dollars—at 28, she was forced to declare bankruptcy. It’s undeniably fascinating to learn how, a few years later, she managed to start Carol’s Daughter with $100 in cash; she slowly built the company—without loans or credit—until she paid off her enormous debt. With such an honest and inspiring tale to tell, it’s unfortunate that Price devotes so much of her time to describing celebrities she’s met along her road to success. A brief encounter with Prince gets a whole page, for example, but her decision to declare bankruptcy takes up little more than a paragraph. Readers might also raise an eyebrow at Price’s repeated belief that "God is in my corner" and that He employs Oprah and other celebrities as messengers to ensure that Price’s business continues to thrive. While Price does seem to be unusually blessed, this materialistic spirituality undercuts a potentially empowering message about discipline and entrepreneurship. (For more information)

Get Yours!: How to Have Everything You Ever Dreamed of and More

According to journalist and editor Barnett, living out a success trifecta (motherhood, marriage, career) isn't as easy as it looks. Having faced her share of sadness-from death and divorce to dead-end jobs and cheating men-Barrett chronicles her turn from despair to dedication on the path to becoming the first African-American woman to run a major mainstream magazine (recently shuttered Teen People). Eager to share the precepts that govern her productive, gratifying life, Barnett fills this book with sisterly advice; "Realize your value and demand the best" is easily the most pivotal of these tips, which also cover friendship, family, career, style, financial security, personal space, men, creativity and spirituality. Concrete steps point readers toward self-confidence and success: face your fears and "embrace them as a chance for growth" by "composing a list of 10 things that scare you"; keep family close by sending out a newsletter, or devoting one full day a month to them. Unfortunately, clichés outnumber innovative ideas, though personal anecdotes and celebrity Q&As (including Gayle King, Kelly Rowland and Venus Williams) prove revealing and encouraging. A fun, knowing and star-studded guide to success, this self-help is suitable for readers at any stage of life. (For More Information)

House of KAS Private Fashion/Spa Event at Gaylord's Relache Spa

I had the honor of sitting front row at the House of KAS Private Fashion Show at the National Harbor this past Friday (4/15/2011), hosted by Think Brown INK. The show featured new pieces from the KAS Collection, Inc. menswear line, KAS Couture women’s line and jewelry by Simply Nina. There was a presentation on MoroccanOil in the Ralache Spa before the show, which I thought was interesting - I just did a review on MoroccanOil (Read Review)
(Waiting for guest to arrive)

Although this was a preview of his latest collection, I didn't want the show to end. I've attended a few shows featuring KAS' collection and I am always left impressed, between his breath-taking selection of models and sheek creations. I was also excited to hear that he has a store at the newly developed National Harbor. I will definitely have to go by there soon. I saw a couple of pieces from the show that I wanted.

KAS is a true gem of fashion, having understudied with the infamous Yves Saint Laurent; He was also named in the top three International Fashion Designers of the Year in 2006, among dozens of other accolades. KAS is regularly called upon to create custom designs and image makeovers for many of today’s A-list celebrities, including Alicia Keys, Deborah Cox, Toni Braxton, Mya, Trey Songz, and many more. Additionally, he is no stranger to the political and government arena, having created the inauguration tuxedo for Rushern Baker, the newly elected County Executive of Prince George’s County, Maryland.
